Making a Daemon army, Chaos Mike Style
One idea that always pops up among Chaos players is the idea of an all Daemon army.
Evil Chaos here we go again.
The way most players approach this idea is with a Daemon Prince, maybe one or two squads of nurglings, and lots of daemons in the warp.
I hate to tell you, but this doesn't work.
The problem is that if you don't have any terrain to hide behind, your Daemon Prince will get killed quicker than an ant under a shoe. The same with the nurglings, though with the new codex you have to have one unit with a mark of Nurgle for each unit of nurglings, so you are looking at going Nurgle if you want to use them. If you do hide your Daemon Prince, any daemon units that come off them are going to have to march across the field. This is not what they where designed to do and they will get shot to pieces before they get into close combat.
Another way is to have an HQ and a retinue in Terminator armor, deep strike them on the board, and have the daemons summon off them. Again same problems as above. You either drop into the middle of the enemy and hope you live long enough to summon daemons, or you drop away from the enemy and have your daemons come in out of position.
But
there is a way....
Here is the list I came up with that I think is as close to a successful daemon army as you are going to find.
1000 point Death Guard Daemon force HQ Great Unclean One (150) Troops 7 Plague Marines (bolt pistol and CCW w/a melta and a plasma pistol and CCW and icon) with one upgraded to Aspiring Champion with a pistol and plague sword. All in a rhino with extra armor and smoke. (226) 7 Plague Marines (bolt pistol and CCW w/a melta and a plasma pistol and CCW and icon) with one upgraded to Aspiring Champion (Daemonhost) with a pistol and plague sword and Daemon Chains. All in a rhino with extra armor and smoke. (246) 7 plaguebearers (112) 7 plaguebearers (112) 7 plaguebearers (112)
How to use it: I would keep the troops in the rhinos until you can assault a unit. Chose a unit that doesn't have anything that will rip through your troops in two rounds of assault. When your daemons come out the next turn, counter assault. I gave the daemonhost Daemon Chains so that there would be a better chance of controlling the way the Unclean One comes out.
