Terrain
It's always more fun to play on a board with well-made, themed terrain, than on a featureless flat place. At the beginning of my 40k days, I didn't have a store to play at, so I played in my apartment, with home-made terrain. Out of self-defense, I had to get better at building terrain pieces! While I now play in a GW store, I'm aware that this may not always be possible, and sometimes it's nice to have your own terrain for a variety of reasons. You may want to have a game outside the store and need some terrain for that. Alternately, you may want to build some themed terrain to match your army or for a specific battle or type of terrain. As I've gone through the years, I've built a variety of terrain, and I've put together some how-tos and advice on how to build it.

Unfortunately, most of my early terrain and articles were in the days before I had a digital camera, and so I don't have any pictures of them. (And a couple that I managed to miss getting pics of.) Here I'll put together a list of these advice pieces and how-to articles. If you need to put together a lot of terrain quickly, check out this article on Fast Terrain. Instead, if you are tired of the same old terrain and want some alternate terrain, go here. If you are looking for underground warfare look for Tunnels and Caves. For basic forests and hills, check out Terrain Making 1. Finally, if you feel like playing in the mud, check out The Swamp.

I do have pictures of some of the terrain projects I've had over the years. The first was a project based around standing stone obelisks, much like StoneHenge. For more details, check out this link.

I also have a few buildings (unpainted so far) that I put together for cityfighting or just more of an urban flavor. Some of them are designed as ruins, some are not. For more details, check out this link.

At one point I moved to an area further from gaming stores, so I decided that I needed my own gaming table. I gave it a lot of consideration and detailed my construction. For more details, check out part 1, part 2, part 3, and part 4.

I saw a great project online for _really_ big trees, so I thought I'd take a crack at it. It turned out even better than I thought, and was easier than I'd thought as well. For more details, check out this link.

While I was playing my Tau army, I'd seen a bunch of Tau-themed terrain in White Dwarf and in the codex and I decided I'd like to have some for myself. While I planned on a few different kinds of buildings, I only actually got around to making the generator tower. It turned out very nicely, if I do say so myself, and it was pretty easy to make as well. For more details, check out this link.

At this point I've got a pretty regular place to play, and they've got all the terrain I could really need, but who's to say when the terrain bug will bite me again? When it does, I'll put the pics up here so you can see it for yourself. If you are interested in tips on making terrain yourself and there's something that's not covered here, feel free to email me (listed below) and I'll see if I can help you. If you are interested in having me build terrain for you, email me and maybe we can work something out.
