4x9 basic Genestealers
3x1 Ravener RC/ST

He had

Bloodthirster
Small Prince
8 Chosen Terminators 2xReaper Autocannon, several Pfists, Asp. Champ.
2x8Berzerkers, each with Chainaxes, Asp. Champ in each squad (1 was demon vessel)
8xflying, hopped up Possessed Marines
Rhino (maybe it was from one of the Berzerker squads?)
Predator
Defiler

Turn 1: I gave him first turn and he moved up his assaulty units. Chosen with Reapers move slightly forward to get better view and shoot a bit. Defiler blows up 3 Genestealers. Chosen wound Carnifex once, Predator wounds Tyrant. Tyranids move up. Carnifi take aim at the Chosen, but cause no damage. Between Scuttling forward and a really hot Fleet roll, one of my Alpha Genestealer units manages to charge the Chosen! My other Genestealers don’t move up quite as far, attempting to get the jump on the Berzerkers. Some Chosen die, as do some Genestealers.

Turn 2: Bloodthirster comes out and tangoes with a Ravener. (kills it, takes a Wound) The unit with the Demon vessel takes this as a sign and makes a high Blood Rage roll, engaging some surprised Genestealers that thought they were out of range for sure. Another unit of Genestealers is surprised as the Flying Posessed engage them (getting a surprising amount of shooting first, but almost leaving themselves without a target.) Brutal nastiness ensues, with the Posessed killing off the Genestealers but unable to consolidate into the next unit of Genestealers, who grin and salivate. The regular Berzerkers continue to fight with the Genestealers, with heavy losses on both sides. The Carnifi take aim at the Defiler and blow off the main gun. 2 Raveners, seeing the fate of the third, zip away from the Bloodthirster and into the Berzerkers tangled with the Genestealers. After more brutality, 1 Ravener and 1 Genestealer are left standing. A nearby unit of Genestealers rushes into the Bloodthirster and kills it off, as the unit that charged the Possessed kills most of them, but they fight on. A final unit of Genestealers charges the slower Berzerker group and wipes them out in a single charge. The Hive Tyrant charges the edge of the Chosen, hoping to clear the kill zone with 6 attacks. 3 hit, 3 Wound, all saved by invulnerables. 1 Powerfist injures it and the rest crowd in, sensing blood.

Turn 3: Genestealers finish off Berzerkers and Possessed and consolidate toward the far side of the board (where the Chosen are) Predator Wounds Carnifex, as does Defiler. The Prince helps the Chosen finish off the Tyrant, but cannot consolidate far enough to engage anyone. Carnifi blow up Defiler. Zoanthropes miss Predator. Lictors pop up and charge the Daemon Prince. Genestealers and Raveners engage Chosen.

Turn 4+: From here it was pretty much mop up. The Prince Tangoes with the Lictors for a while, but is eventually taken down. The Chosen kill a lot of models but are eventually dragged down, and the Predator gets pasted by a Zoanthrope. The Rhino, not being a Marked unit, retreats to end the game.

I had expected it to be a brutal battle, but the amount of damage we both inflicted surprised me. I had forgotten just how many attacks Khornate units get, and they took a toll on my army. I ended up with about 2 mostly full units of Genestealers, a single one from another brood, both Carnifi and the 3 Zoanthropes. Everything else got slaughtered. Final score 1940-1131, a solid victory for the Tyranids, but it looked awfully pyrrhic! Lesson learned? Especially against Khorne, too much overkill is barely enough. I needed to reinforce my charges more, since any models not killed at my Initiative step would inflict a lot of casualties in return. In particular, that squad of Chosen Terminators sucked up a tremendous amount of damage, making invulnerable saves right and left.

Hard and crunchy on the outside, chewy in the middle!

Unrelated to the campaign, I also got in a game against an Armored Company, which was rather interesting. I had 1850pts of Tyranids lined up against 9 Imperial Guard Tanks!

I had a similar list to that above, just slightly smaller. He took 3 Leman Russ Vanquishers (Commander and 2 Tank Aces, the Vanquisher is the one with the extra long range on the battle cannon.) Of his remaining tanks, I think he had one Leman Russ Exterminator and the rest were regular Leman Russes, mostly with a Hull Lascannon and Sponson Heavy Bolters, if I recall correctly.

The first three turns of the game went pretty much like you'd expect them to. My Tyranids scrabbled forward and got blown up by the big pie plates of doom. Of the 52 Genestealers I'd started with, only 3 made it into contact with his line!

On the other hand, once I got to his lines, it was my game. Those three Genestealers popped a tank. (Two of them died when it exploded, but the third one ducked and ran away to attack another tank.) My Hive Tyrant got 3 tanks by himself, but the resulting explosions eventually killed him. My Zoanthropes and Carnifexes accounted for another several tanks, and made sure his line was boxed in so no one could run. My Raveners mostly just got shot this game, but that's okay, that meant that other things weren't getting shot, so something could get to his lines.

Final result? Tyranids are the only things left on the board, though there weren't many of them! At the end of the game, I had a Lictor and 2 or 3 Zoanthropes and 2 Carnifi (1 with 2 or 3 Wounds!) But it was still a victory for the Tyranids, and it was a lot of fun, which is the important thing!
